An instructional technology librarian, Ms. Van Scoyoc recognizes that online health information is available in such large amounts that it is easy to become completely overwhelmed. During her presentation she will share tips on locating, as well as evaluating, online health-related resources.
“Even as a mother, I find simply ‘Googling’ symptoms to determine if my child has an ear infection or something potentially much more serious can result in frustrating information overload,” she comments. “There are some amazing and very reliable resources available via the Internet, but unfortunately there are equally dangerous sites operated for ulterior motives. Correctly using the tools available to you can make consumer health research a far less stressful process that can yield quality, reliable information.”
After completing her Master of Science degree in Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2001, Ms. Van Scoyoc initially worked as an instructional technology librarian and later as an instructional services librarian at The University of Georgia in Athens and at Emory University in Atlanta , respectively. She currently works in the public library sector where she remains involved with teaching, both conceptualizing and implementing workshops designed to enhance and strengthen community members’ computer skills.
